Windows Live is working on a new feature of Windows Live Messenger dubbed as “Messenger IM Control”. At Mix UK, ScottIsAFul from liveside.net managed to get the first look of this new feature from Danny Thorpe and Angus Logan who are both very much involved with the Windows Live Platform. Here is a link of ScottIsAFull’s Interview with Danny Thorpe and Angus Logan.

According to Liveside.net,

Users of the Web2Messenger service will already be familiar with the concept of this, as basically it means you can set up your account to allow anonymous messages from the web, which people would send to you from a “Messenger window” on your website/blog.

When the feature becomes available, you would go to the settings page on the net for it and select that you would like to enable this feature, you can then create the html that will go on your website/blog. This will allow people to see when you’re online and allow them to then start up a conversation with you.

At the start of this year, stories started surfacing on the blogs about Microsoft’s free web analytics tool, codenamed Gatineaue which later on confirmed by Ian Thomas (Director at Microsoft Digital Advertising Solutions) on his blog.

Gatineau is the name of the Canadian city where DeepMetrix ( Web Analytics Tool is based on this product) was based for a number of years. Final naming for the product is still unconfirmed.

Yesterday, Ian Thomas has made the first public presentation of Gatinueaue on Web Analytics Day. Ian has also shared some information about the tool on interview with Robin Wauters of Blognation. If you guys are interested in screenshots, the first look of Gatineaue is available on Sam Sethi’s Blognation website.

The invite request line is open for the first beta version of web analytics tool. Ian has confirmed that first beta invitations will be sent before the end of this month. During the beta phase, users of Project Gatineau will be required to create an adCenter account. While use of Project Gatineau is completely free of charge, there is a one-time $5 charge upon creation of an adCenter account. If you already have an adCenter account, you may use the e-mail address associated with that account.

Gatineau will be initially rolled out in English only, and only in countries who have a local adCenter support team.

The Google-Microsoft battle is now one step ahead with the addition of new service called Windows Live Translator Beta, into the managed beta testing of Windows Live Suite. The service is very similar to Google Translate and Yahoo’s Babelfish (developed by Altavista in nineties).

Windows Live Translator is powered by a French company called Systran which also provides the technology for Yahoo’s Babelfish and most of language combinations offered by Google Translate.

The Windows Live Translation Service takes bits of text and translates it from or into any of twelve languages. Entire web pages can also be translated by entering the URL.

Windows Live Translator’s presentation is very interesting with four different views for the translated URL:

Side By Side ( Default View)

Top – Bottom

Original text with hover translation

Translated text with hover original text

Default view shows the original page and the translation side by side in two vertical frames. If you hover over a sentence in one of the pages, the sentence is highlighted in both pages. If you scroll in one of the pages, the other page performs the same action (doesn’t work in Firefox).

Microsoft has recently switched its main website, www.microsoft.com to Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft-IIS/7.0. Microsoft.com is the 5th most trafficked site in the world, 4th most in the US. The site is supported by roughly 80 Web servers delivering content daily to around 287M unique users via +300k concurrent connections at a rate of over 10k requests per second.

The Operations team for MSCom had been playing with IIS7 since its early beta builds and recently finished deploying the new Web server in Windows Server 2008 Beta 3 to all its production servers.

Although Windows Server 2008 is not yet released, Beta 3 is publicly available for early adopters to use. Internet Information Server 7 is already released, but will probably not see widespread use until Windows Server 2008 (formerly “Longhorn”) is released, since it only runs on Windows Server 2008 or Windows Vista.

There are already around 2,600 sites running Windows Server 2008 on the Internet. Whilst some of the servers running Windows Server 2008 are at Microsoft itself, the majority are not, with developers and hosting companies taking advantage of Windows Server 2008’s availability under a Go Live license which allows the beta to be used for testing or in a live environment without cost.

Windows Server 2008 is due to be released in the second half of 2007, although there has been media speculation – fueled by the 2008 name – that a release may be at the end of that period. Once it is released, it could be expected to take a long time for large numbers of sites to move over to the latest version; it took several years for the installed base of Windows Server 2003 to overtake Windows 2000, and there are still some 5 million sites running on Windows 2000 even today.

Highlights on IIS 7

Module Based Installation

IIS Metabase Compatibility component

XML Configuration File don’t contain machine specific settings

Delegated, Remote Administration

Built-in FastCGI support for PHP and other dynamic languages

FTP server includes secure publishing with FTP/SSL support

Livestation, a project currently under development, is based on the technology developed by Microsoft Research team of Cambridge. The project is an effort of Skinkers with support from Microsoft Research team.

LiveStation is currently in beta stage, but essentially the project is designed to enable users to watch live television on their machines. “Interactive live TV on the PC that works” is in fact the slogan under which the LiveStation beta project went live.

“LiveStation is a software solution, co-developed with Microsoft Research, designed to allow people to watch live TV on their desktop in a highly scalable way and without requiring broadcasters to invest a large amount of money in hardware and infrastructure,” reveals a message posted on the LiveStation website.

LiveStation uses Microsoft Silverlight to create a rich interactive user experience for live video delivery. The peer-to-peer approach ensures bandwidth usage is minimized and removes the need for powerful, expensive server farms to stream live TV shows and events.

To watch the Live TV, LiveStation users will simply need to click the LiveStation viewer, which can be embedded in a browser installed through website or distributed on physical media.
